PUNE: Unknown callers duped a 38-year-old Nigdi man of Rs13.67 lakh by luring him to invest in Bitcoins. The callers told him to download an application and made him invest money through the app and duped him.
Inspector Vishwajeet Khule of the Nigdi police told TOI that the complainant works in a private firm in the Pimpri Chinchwad area. “This April, he got a call and the caller promised him profits in Bitcoins,” Khule said.
The caller sent a link to the complainant and told him to fill the details. “The caller told him to download an app to buy the Bitcoins. The complainant then went on to transfer money to the caller as and when he asked,” Khule said.
The victim was told he had earned $100,000 and to send money for completing the transfer process, payment of taxes and other expenditure. “The victim transferred Rs 13.67 lakh to the caller in April and May,” Khule said.
When no money came through, he realised that he was duped.
